Question

I read a fatwa on an Islamic site which says there are some good and rewardable innovations. I would love to know more about this, since the Holy Prophet (saws) says that all innovations are irrelevant.

Answer

A "good innovation" as mentioned by some scholars means to come up with a new method or way to revive the Sunnah of the Prophet (saws), not to contradict it. Therefore, it is an innovation in a linguistic sense and not in a jurisprudential or technical sense.

For instance, when Umar ibn al-Khattab (raa) ordered for there to only be one congregation for taraweeh prayers in Ramadan and he gathered all the eminent companions to pray behind only one imam, he said after that, "What a good innovation that is!"
