Question
A girl is pregnant in her second month because of a fornicating relationship. She wants to have an abortion, so what is the ruling, considering that she is from the countryside, and she says that if her family knew about it, there would be terrible problems? May Allaah benefit you.

Answer
In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful. All praise is for Allaah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions, and those who are loyal to him. The principle rule is that the fetus must be maintained, and it is innocent and not responsible for the mother’s sins! In any case, some people of knowledge permitted abortion as a concession, so long the soul was not yet blown into him, and so long there is a dire need or necessity to the level that makes this act required. If the woman sincerely repented to Allaah and feared for her life if her family knew of her major sin, then I hope that Allaah forgives her if she has an abortion, with the condition that she does it immediately and without delay, because the act becomes more unlawful with each passing day. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
