Question
Assalaamu `alaykum My understanding is that in Jewish law it is ok to eat gelatin made from pork products as it has been chemically altered from its original form. Therefore, when I see an ingredient listed as kosher gelatin, I am still not sure if it is from a pork product or not. Is it considered permissible to eat Kosher gelatin, as the Jews are from the Ahl al Kitaab? Or should it be avoided given the possibility of it being derived from pork? jazakumallahu khayran for your time and please correct any misunderstandings I may have
Answer
Wa alaikum assalaaam:
The chemical altering of the original forms of things called (Istihalah) in the Islamic books of jurisprudence. So, regardless the Jewish law, in our religion Islam; it is a strong opinion of many Muslim Jurists that the chemical alter of thing makes it a new thing.
To the best of my knowledge the term “Kosher gelatin” in the American market means different things according to the way it is written on the product, but in general it means a Gelatin taken from cow or chickens not from pork or horse. They call it (Hallacha) in Hebrew which means (Halal).
