As-salamu alaykum wa rehmat Allahi wa barakatuhu. My question is regarding my hijab. I've always worn loose clothing and covered my hair completely when in public (as in, at college or at the mall). Due to the way I was raised (in a culture-oriented environment), I was not taught the importance of full hijab and thus I would not cover my hair at family gatherings where non-mahram relatives were also present. However, Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) has blessed me with hidaya (guidance). Al-hamdulillah, I am now practicing full-time hijab and am on a constant journey to increase my taqwa (God-consciousness) and get closer to Allah, inshaAllah. Our family has always been semi-practicing and I thank Allah for my mom and grandmother who were always keeping us on the right track, telling us to pray, to read the Quran, to wear loose clothing, etc. However, no one really maintains full hijab in my family. I have two questions:
1) Concerning pictures and home videos, etc., of me from the time when I did not yet maintain full hijab: those photos and home videos are spread all over our family and relatives, many of whom are not mahram. Will I be held accountable for them in front of my Lord? I worry because they now know I do hijab, but they still have photos, etc., of me without it.
2) I want my sisters, close friends and family to also start wearing hijab full-time and I'm having a difficult time convincing them. Do you have any advice?
Jazakum Allahu khairan for your response and may Allah reward you for the great work you are doing in His path, Ameen. As-salamu alaykum wa rehmat Allah.
As for the pictures and videotapes from your pre-hijab days, you should ask your relatives to discard these pictures in a nice, polite way.
Keep your advising your female relatives to maintain full hijab, kindly and sincerely, until Allah (swt) grants them guidance.
