Assalam alaikum,
This question is in behalf of a sister in Islam. Does saying "talaq" three times leads to a (divorce) in Islam? If not, I need detailed information on this.
Jazakum Allah khair.
Yes, it does.
According to the vast majority of scholars, divorcing one’s wife three times entails terminating the marriage contract permanently, in which they cannot establish a new marriage contract without the wife getting married to someone else first, having a conjugal relationship with him, [subsequently] getting divorced and completing the waiting period in order for the divorce to be finalized. Only then can she marry her previous husband again.
However, a few scholars are of the opinion that divorcing three times at once (all at the same time) should be counted as only one divorce. This approach has reasonable evidence, which is why it is adopted by many contemporary scholars and fiqh councils, in order to make it easy for people and preserve families from being broken apart.
