Question

Is Jumu’ah (Friday) prayer obligatory for the prisoner?

Answer
  • Jumu’ah prayer is considered fard ‘ayn (an individual duty) for each Muslim, mukallaf (legally competent), male and settled, whether in a non-Islamic or Islamic country. Hence, there is no sound authentic evidence in Shari`ah referring to the obligation of performing Jumu’ah prayer only in Islamic countries and not in non-Islamic ones

  • Therefore, prisoners are obliged to perform Jumu’ah prayer if it is facilitated for them. However, when prisoners have the chance to perform Jumu`ah prayer and the systems of the prison do not prevent their gathering for praying, then they should select one of them to be their Imam. But if they are unable to perform it, it is ok/valid to pray Zuhr prayer instead.
