Question

Peace be upon you. I hope you would clarify for me the extent to which the following hadith, reported as being from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), is authentic?

"The best of houses before Allah is the house in which there is an orphan being treated generously."

Also, what is the meaning of this hadith?

May Allah bless you.

Answer

All praise is for Allah, and may peace and blessing be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family. To proceed:

This hadith has been reported with the wording, "Verily, the most beloved of houses to Allah is the house in which there is an orphan being treated generously." Imâm at-Tabarâni (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted this hadith in his Al-Mu`jam ul-Kabîr, the chapter of the letter `aîn, from the hadith of Abdullah ibn `Umar ibn al-Khattâb (may Allah be pleased with them both), 12/3888, no. 13434.

Imâm Ibn Abî ad-Duniâ (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted it in his Kitâb ul-`Ayyâl (Book of Dependants), Bâb fîl-Yatâmâ (The Chapter on Orphans), 2/89, no. 608, with the wording, "The most beloved of houses to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is a house from which an orphan is treated generously."

He said, "This hadith is weak (da`îf). In its chain of narrators is Is~hâq al-Hanînî who alone narrated from Mâlik ibn Anas."

Imâm al-Haîthamî (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Majma` az-Zawâ`id, Kitâb ul-Birr was-Silah (The Book of Honoring Parents and Maintaining Blood Relations), Bâb Ma Jâ`a fîl-Aytâm wal-Arâmil wal-Masâkîn (The Chapter of Orphans, Widows and the Poor), 8/294, no. 13513, "At-Tabarâni related it and it contains Is~hâq ibn Ibrâhîm al-Hanînî, who was one of those who made mistakes in narration." Shaîkh al-Albânî (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him weak in Da`îf at-Targhîb wat-Tarhîb, 2/81, no. 1509, and As-Silsilat ud-Da`îfah, 4/140, no. 1636.

"The best house of the Muslims is a house in which there is an orphan being treated well, and the worst house of the Muslims is a house in which there is an orphan being mistreated." This was transmitted by Ibn Mâjah in his Sunan, Kitâb ul-Adab (The Book of Etiquette), Bâb Haqq ul-Yatîm (The Chapter on the Rights of Orphans), 3679; al-Bukhârî in Al-Adab ul-Mufrad, Kitâb ul-Yatîm (The Book of Orphans), Bâb Khaîru Baîtin fîhi Yatîmun Yuhsanu Ilaîhi (The Chapter of: The Best House is the One in Which an Orphan is Being Treated Well); at-Tabarâni in his Mu`jam ul-Awsat, in the fifth section, under the name `Ubaîd, no. 4785; and `Abd ibn Hamîd in his Musnad, from the hadith of Abî Huraîrah (may Allah be pleased with him), 1467 (may Allah have mercy on them all).

Imâm al-Mundhirî (may Allah have mercy on him) in At-Targhîb wat-Tarhîb, 3/314, said, "There does not appear to be any possibility [that this hadith is] of good authenticity." Imam al-`Irâqî (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his revision of the authenticity of Ihyâ` `Uloom id-Dîn 2/260, "There is weakness in it [this hadith]." Shaîkh al-Albânî (may Allah have mercy on him) declared it to be weak in Da`îf ibn Mâjah, 739.
