Question

This is a follow up of my earlier question Fatwa ID: 3131.

Asslamo alaikum,

I guess more detail from me is necessary. I am diagnosed with OCD, and I take medication for it as well. The sins I am talking about aren't acts, but just thoughts of a sexual nature that I probably had when I was young, like in my teens. The thing is that I don't know if those were just waswasa (evil whispering) or was I really thinking about that stuff, and if try to think or feel regret about them, I get depressed.

I've never thought about stuff like that since then, but I would like to know if I can just repent to Allah without remembering all over again.

Hope this clears everything up, insha'Allah.

Answer

All praise be to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be on the greatest messenger, Muhammad.

Dear brother,

You are not held accountable for your thoughts, as long as you do not speak or act upon them. Allah is most merciful and fair, and He would not punish you for those thoughts. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

" إِنَّ اللَّهَ عز وجل تَجَاوَزَ لِأُمَّتِي عَمَّا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا ما لم تَعْمَلْ أو تَكَلَّمْ بِهِ"

“Allah (Exalted be He) pardoned my Ummah (nation) concerning their thoughts so long as they do not act them out or speak about them.” (Agreed upon, and this is Muslim’s wording)

Rest assured of Allah’s justice and mercy and seek forgiveness in general, for we all make mistakes, whether we recognize them or not.

And Allah knows best.
