Question
Asslam Alikum

I read in one of the Fatwas by Dr. Main Khalid Al-Qudah that AMJA will discuss the public need for students loans in its annual convention and may post a fatwa regarding this topic Mid-November.

could you please help find this fatwa. I am currently a per-medical student, and I really need an answer to this topic as soon as possible.

Answer
AA All praise are due Allah. May His peace and blessings be upon His last and best prophet Muhammad. A subsidized loan is allowed for those who are in need for it, as long as the student is –almost- sure that he/she will be able to pay off the debt in full within the grace period. It is not the case with the unsubsidized loan, since it is an interest-bearing loan from day one. In most cases, a student does not have the financial ability to pay in full within six months, eventually, the loan wil be converted- automatically- into an interest one ! I would highly recommend those who are in need for such a loan (which is most likely the case of the majority of them) to take less credit hours per semester, and work hard to save some money for their tuition for the next semesters. Meanwhile, they should keep asking the trustworthy scholars they know, since they might have a legitimate solution for this issue. My apology, but the declaration of the AMJA annual convention for this year did not mention this point clearly. Allah knows best.
