Question
I have tattoos of things with souls in them from when I was a non-muslim. Will this cause the angels to neglect me? Should I cover them for prayer (only)? Is it permissible to tattoo over them, defacing them, or does wudhu purify them and/or shahadah make them have no effect at all, since everything before is forgiven?

Answer

All praise be to Allah, and may his peace and blessings be on the last and best prophet and messenger, Muhammad.

Tattooing is haram in all forms, because it involves changing the creation of Allah, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the one who does tattoos and the one for whom that is done. Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “May Allah curse the women who do tattoos and those for whom tattoos are done, those who pluck their eyebrows and those who file their teeth for the purpose of beautification and alter the creation of Allah.”

Having said that, all of your sins before Islam are forgiven by the acceptance of Islam and pronunciation of the testimony of truth.

You should try to remove the tattoos or at least the faces only if that doesn`t overburden you financially or bring about harm to your body.

If you can`t, then Allah is most forgiving and just, and the Angels will never neglect you. I would not say you must cover them when you pray, but if you chose to do that out of piety, then I hope you will be rewarded for your diligence to respect the sacred injunctions of Allah.

May Allah increase your iman and purify your heart.

Allah knows best.
