Assalaam alaikum wa rahmat Allah, Sheikh:
Is it allowed to wear the Nike brand knowing that Nike means, "god of victory"? Are Muslims allowed to sell this brand? I got a fatwa from <islamqa.com> stating that it is not allowed, but I would like a collective fatwa on this, insha'Allah. Please let me know, because I want to sell the Nike brand in my store.
Jazak Allah khair.
All Praise is due to Allah and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon his final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad.
Dear Enquirer,
Regardless of the original meaning of the word, "Nike," people who use or trade in such a commodity apparently do not have the intention of promoting the Greek deity at all, nor do they have the intention of insulting it by writing its name on their shoes. They look at it as a trademark like any other trademark on the market. In addition, most of them do not even know the linguistic meaning of the word.
Based on the aforementioned reasons, using any Nike products is allowed.
