Question
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh, Is it allowed to get rid of unlawful money that has been generated from (selling) pork and alcohol, by spending it on paying the school fees for poor Muslim children, so that they may study in private Islamic schools in the West? What is meant with general interest (when it is used to answer where to spend such money)? May Allaah write this in the scale of your good deeds.

Answer
In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful. All praise is due to Allaah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions, and those loyal to him. It is permissible to spend such filthy (unlawful) money by paying some of the school fees for poor Muslim students who study in Islamic private schools in the West, with the condition that you quit this unlawful work. Moreover, if you think that by spending this money on such purpose you remove from yourself the sin and its consequences, then know that it is nothing but Shaytan’s deception! You are first required to stop these unlawful acts, then calculate the amount of money you have earned from this unlawful source of income and spend it as you have suggested, or in any other general interest, as that is a means to get rid of the unlawful money and not a form of charity, because Allaah is Good and only accepts what is good. May Allaah grant you and us success. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
