Question
What is the verdict on playing Qur`an tapes or other religious tapes in the bathroom, noting that there are bathrooms that come with speakers and CD players? Could playing them in the bathroom be considered like an echo reaching in from outside the bathroom?

Answer
It is not permissible to play Qur`an tapes inside these places, nor is it permissible to play tapes that contain remembrance of Allah Most High, because that is not like an echo reaching in from outside and the difference is obvious. The proof for that is "that a man passed by while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was urinating and he greeted him, saying `Assalaam alaikum`, but he did not reply." Also, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) "when he would enter the bathroom, he would take off his ring, because on the ring there was an inscription, containing mention of Allah, `Muhammad, Rasool Allah`".
