Question

May the peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you.

Some shop owners work, from time to time, in the business of selling a few prepaid cards for recharging the balance on a cell phone, because of the high demand for them. They sell a card worth ten dinars for twelve. Is this sale permissible? Or is it the essence of riba (interest) because it violates the rules of changing money since the card can be considered money and the condition of changing the same currency is that the merchandise be received on the spot and that like be exchanged for like? You have my utmost gratitude.

Answer

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessing be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

It appears that these cards represent a service with money value and that they are not a type of pure money, so there does not appear to me to be anything wrong with selling them for more than their official price, although care should be taken to mind the general rules of being forbearing in sales and lenient with buyers.

And Allah Almighty is more Exalted and more Knowledgeable.
