Question

Assalamu alaikum,

I was prescribed the medication Lovenox, a blood thinning injection, to take during my pregnancy after having experienced two miscarriages. The ingredients in Lovenox are derived from pork (porcine intestinal mucosa). I was wondering if taking medication with pork related ingredients in such a case would be permissible. I have asked for an alternative (Arixtra), but it is not as commonly prescribed for pregnant women as Lovenox for blood thinning ailments. There have been studies showing that Lovenox does not pass to the fetus, while Arixtra may cross the placenta to the fetus. Any advice you could provide would be appreciated.

Jazak Allah khair.

Answer

Medical treatment is a necessity in Islamic law, and since there is no other alternative to the medicine mentioned in your question, you may use it as needed.
