Assalamu alaikum,
I would like to know if it is halal or haram for a Muslim to be the president of a country because most of the countries in the world are free and don't use Sharia? If yes, how can he do that? Also, can a Muslim woman be a minister? Why?
In Muslim countries these days, the highest executive authority (presidency or any position similar to it) has usually been taken by force in one way or another. Also, when someone is in charge, he has broad authority over legislation, in addition to the power to control and govern his country. Having said that, if a practicing Muslim could be in charge, and rule his people according to Allah’s command, then there is no doubt that it is allowed to obtain such a position.
As for a woman holding the position of minister, scholars have different approaches regarding this point. To the best of my knowledge, the soundest one is that she is not allowed to hold such a position.
