Question

Assalamu alaikum.

 

I live in California and I am ready to attend college, but there has been a big concern with my parents that attending college here in the USA is haram because it's mixed, as in female/male campus. I have heard numerous times that as long as a girl wears full hijab it is permissible. Continuing my education is very important to me, so your answer will effect my views and decisions. May Allah bless all who help our brothers and sisters in Islam.

Answer

When you have the option to attend a non-mixed college, then you need to. But if the only option you have for continuing your education is to attend a mixed one, then you can attend it while adhering to your hijab and Islamic ethics in dealing with others. It is not haram at all to do so.
