Question
I am a married woman and have a sister that is pregnant and has two children in Canada and I live in Lebanon. Is it allowed that I travel to her without a legitimate Mahram with the permission of my husband to help her at childbirth?

Answer
In the Name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful All praise belongs to Allaah, and may peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, and upon his family, companions, and those allied with him. May Allaah increase you in cautiousness and success. Know that the default is that a woman is not to travel except with a Mahram (Adult, Sane, Muslim male relative permanently forbidden for her to marry) due to what has been narrated about that of authentic evidences. Some scholars made an except for a woman to travel to the obligatory Hajj or Umrah with trustworthy company. They consented to this based on Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, permitting for the wives of the prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in that. Some made the analogy between that and every travel as an act of obedience if she is secure of the tribulations and secure of the road. What is apparent to me is that it is possible to consent, in imitation of this opinion, during a strong need. Therefore, if you are chosen to serve your sister and no companion was found for you, and security is granted from tribulations and the road, then I hope that there is no harm insha Allaah. And Allaah, the most High, knows best.
