Question
Assalamu alaikum dear respected scholars. May Allah reward you for this site. The question is as follows: What is the ruling concerning the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccince and giving it to the daughters of Muslims? May Allah reward you for your efforts. Assalamu alaikum.
Answer
Alhamdu-li-llah wa as-Salatu wa as-Salamu 'ala Rasool-il-llah,
As for the administration of vaccines in general, the late Sh. 'Abd-ul-'Azeez ibn Baaz/ said, "There is nothing wrong with giving medicine to ward off the feared disease, because the Prophet r said,
"من تصبح كل يوم بسبع تمرات عجوة لم يضره في ذلك اليوم سم ولا سحر."
"Whoever eats seven dates of Madeenah in the morning will not be harmed by witchcraft or poison."
As for HPV, the reason the enquirer is concerned is the fact that this disease is a sexually transmitted disease. I would caution you though that the infection with this virus may be a precursor to cancer. I would also like to emphasize that the Muslim woman may contract it from a Muslim husband who may have committed some wrong-doing or was married to an infected woman…etc. Based on that, it is not impossible for a Muslim woman not involved herself in any wrong-doing to get infected.
If one thinks that the likelihood of this happening doesn't warrant getting the vaccine, they may not give it.
Ultimately, it is permissible to give it, and whether or not it is better would be contingent upon the balance of possible harms and benefits.
Allah knows best.
