I am pregnant in the second month and my doctor prescribed prenatal vitamins (including minerals, calcium) and other things beneficial to my health and the health of the baby. It comes in the form of a capsule, but it contains gelatin, so should I take it or not, knowing that all other alternatives also contain gelatin and I am now fasting, wAlhamdullilaah. Jazakum Allaah Khyran.
In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful. All praise is due to Allaah, and peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, upon his family, companions, and those loyal to him.
Consuming these types of medicines invalidates the fast without a doubt. So if you need it and your doctor affirmed the importance of consuming it in order to avoid any possible harm to you or the baby, then there is no burden on you to break the fast and make it up another time. As for gelatin, if an alternative medicine is available, then it is undeniably better – steering clear from differences of opinions and more preserving for the religion, considering the possibility of the gelatin containing any by-products from dead animals or pig meat or its bones, especially since its chemical transformation to another substance is debatable. However, if there are no alternatives and it is necessary to consume it, then there is no burden on you. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
