Question
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakatuh. Is it an obligation to pray Tahiyyat Al-Masjid before we pray Eid? Correct me if I am wrong - there is no prayer after Fajr - is this wrong or a matter related to the schools of Fiqh? Note that we are followers of the Maliki Madhhab. Benefit us, Jazaak Allaahu Khayran, Wassalamu Alaykum.
Answer
In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful. All praise is due to Allaah, and peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, upon his family, companions, and those loyal to him. The default with regards to Eid prayer is that it is (to be held) in public and not in the mosque, in which case there is no recommended prayer before or after it. The only exception would be if it is prayed in the mosque for a reason that arose, wherein you would pray Tahiyyat Al-Masjid as you normally would when you enter the masjid at any time. The forbidden prayer after the morning and 'Asr prayers are the Nafl Mutlaq prayers (spontaneous offering of rak'at outside of those specifically recommended in the sunnah by number at particular times). As for prayers due to a reason, there is no harm in them. They are to be prayed at any time; such as the two rak'ah of Tawaaf (i.e. rotating around the Ka'bah) or Tahiyyat Al-Masjid and the likes. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
