Question

Salam Alikom wa rahmatu illhi wa barakatuhu We are collecting the zakat al fitr at the Masjid and inchallah we will distribute it before the day of Eid and we are calculating the amount of the zakat ul fitr for different families based on the estimation of what we collected from last year. 1 /what to do if our estimation was too high and we did not collect enough money to distribute : where should we get the money (from zakat, general fund, sadaqah) ? 2/ how can we distribute the money collect just at the Eid prayer, (it is impossible for us to distribute it before Eid salat, since some people pay it just before the khutba), should we split it again and distribute it or put it in the sadaqah or zakat account or others accounts ?

Answer

AAWW

1-      You can take from the Zakah, the donation, or from the general fund money.

2-      Collecting Zakatul-Fitr after the second half of Ramadan is allowed. As people in charge, you are expected to follow up with your community and to keep reminding them till you make sure everybody pays his/her Zakah.

3-      From your end, you should distribute Zakat ul-Fitr way before Eid day, so to allow enough time for the needy to buy whatever they need -- this is if you choose to pay it via cash money, which is more beneficial and useful for the needy than giving them in-kind items.

4-      In case of receiving Zakat ul-Fitr in the Eid day before Eid prayer; just distribute it ASAP even after the day of Eid, and the one who should be blamed is the Zakah payer. As for you, you will be rewarded-in sha Allah- as this is the best you can do in this case.
