Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, is there any way or circumstance in which trick or treating can be acceptabl ein Islam? I am an American revert and really want my daughter to experience a fun piece of my culture. What if I explain it as candy sharing day where we get to dress up?
All praise be to Allah and may His blessings and peace be on His last messenger, Muhammad.
Your feelings for your daughter are understandable. However, our two ‘eids should be also about candy-sharing and dressing up. The difference is that our two ‘eids commemorate and celebrate righteousness, and they don’t have the negative conceptions and practices attached to Halloween. Candy-begging is not an Islamic virtue, because in Islam, asking favors from people should be a last resort, and for necessity, not a luxury. There are many non-Muslim Americans who don’t celebrate Halloween because they don’t approve of it. Finally, celebrating our ‘eids confirms our Islamic identity whereas celebrating Halloween erodes it. Allah knows best.
