Question

Salaams. Peace be unto you. What is the ruling on the sport of boxing? Do scholars differ on this? I have heard that boxing is okay (amateur boxing, boxing without monetary reward) is okay, but that professional boxing is a "blood sport" and forbidden. Of course we also see very popular professional boxers like Amir Khan who are practicing Muslims. This is all very confusing. Certainly boxing has some benefit (self defense, self discipline) but I am wondering what the definitive opinion is? May Allah (SWT) bless you you and thank you for your time.

Answer

Alhamdu Lillah

By consensus of their eminence; the Members of the Fiqh Council of the Muslim World League; Boxing is prohibited and should not considered as a sport. This is due to the extreme harm and fatal damage- some times- boxing cause.

The above declaration was issued on the 10th annual convention in Mekkah-Saudi Arabia, on 1987.

It is obvious that training on Boxing without harming others is allowed.
