Question
Assalamu-alaikum. Does Islam allow to have dogs as pets in residential homes? Some argue that they can be inside the home if kept for the purpose of protection. Jazaka'Allah.
Answer
Alhamdu Lillah
Having dogs solely as pets is not allowed, while having a guard dog, hunting dog, or a home security one, or for personal protection is obviously allowed as needed only.
The Prophet SAAW said (Whoever owns a dog, his daily reward will be reduced for one Keerat, unless it is a guard or a garden one). Keerat is a measure of volume.
When owning a dog for a legitimate reason, the dog has to be outside the house, as the Prophet SAAW said (Angels do not enter a house if it has a dog or a statue).
