Question
Assalamu Alaikum, Is it haram to wear a wedding ring? Barakallahu feek
Answer
All praise is due to Allah, to proceed,
Wearing a ring is originally permissible in Islam. The Prophet asked the man who proposed for marriage to present the woman a gift even if it is an iron ring (related by Bukahri and Muslim). It is similarly known that the Prophet wore a ring (reported by Anas in Bukhari). Therefore, it is permissible to wear after putting the following points into consideration:
- Wearing the ring should not be accompanied by believing that it is a means of fostering the tie of marriage as it is common among some Muslims who including each person's name on the other's ring. Such a belief is renders it unlawful. It is rendered, then, unlawful, because it is based on a non-Islamic principle. The Islamic principle here is permissibility without correlating it to any further beliefs.
- A man cannot wear a gold ring since the Prophet prohibited that.
- If the two parties are not already related through a legal contract and are still engaged, it is not permissible for each party to help the other wearing the ring because the Prophet prohibited a woman to touch a man without a barrier. Engagement does not entail all the legal effects of marriage.
Allah knows Best.
