Question

Is the copper-T IUD haram because it causes counter implantation which means a women can get pregnant but the zygot won't be able to live in the uterus due to the effects of the copper-T IUD. I hear DR. Niak say it is similar to abortion, but My doctor said that the chances are rare that one gets pregnant so i shouldn"t worry, but would this be like killing a nafis and is it haram? If so can i use the birth control pills for a temporary method because i have 3 childern a 4yr, 2yr, and 7 month old and want to continue my education and separate between my childern in order to raise and teach them to be good muslims. jak

Answer

All praise be to Allah, and may His blessings and peace be on His last prophet and messenger, Muhammad.

Given the actual occurrence of this very rare scenario, that would amount to forbidden abortion according to the Malikis. According to the three other madhahib, it would not. According to many physicians, IUDs are safer for the woman than OCPs. Based on the above, there is no harm in using IUDs. One should use the type that causes the least incidence of occurrence of the above scenario.

Allah knows best.
