Question

Asalamu Alaikum, Is it permissible to eat food that has soy sauce in it? The most common type of soy sauce used at Asian restaurants (both halal and non-halal) is the Kikkoman brand. According to the company website: "Kikkoman soy sauce contains greater than 2% alcohol by volume. The alcohol is not added, but is a result of the fermentation process.

Like wine or beer, the soy sauce is brewed and made from wheat, soybeans, salt and water. During fermentation, the wheat starches are broken down to sugars and part of the sugar is changed into alcohol. At this percent of alcohol, would it make a difference if the food was heated or stir fried before heating, so that the alcohol will "cook off?" JazakumAllahu Khairan

Answer

It is permissible to eat food that has soy sauce in it, because all food is Halal fro us unless we have a prove that it is Haram. As for it contains alcohol that did not make it a form of Khmer or a drink that will intoxicated the one who consume it.
