Question

Assalamu alaikum Imam,

I recently ate a fish meal at a restaurant that also serves pork. What is the hukum (ruling)?

If I touched a pig, do I have to wash my hand 7 times plus 1 time with soil? I [heard that] some scholars mentioned: It is sufficient to wash them once, because there is no command to wash something impure seven times, one of which is with dust or dirt, except in the case of impurity caused by a dog.

Can you clarify?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy

All praise belongs to Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon Allah’s final Messenger.

It is fine to eat fish at a restaurant that serves pork, as long as it is not known to you or not likely that they use the same pans to cook pork and fish, without washing [the pans between the two uses].

Touching a pig that is alive is controversial: some scholars have said you don’t need to wash at all, because live animals are not najis (impure). Some said you should wash once, and some said you should wash seven times. It is safer to wash, but you only need to wash once.

Allah knows best.
