Assalamu alaikum,
May Allah (SWT) bless you and reward you immensely for your services to the ummah.
Could you please tell me any authentic du’a for increase in rizq [provision]? Are there any steps that a Muslim can take for increase in rizq?
Jazakum Allah Khair.
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy
All praise belongs to Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon Allah’s final Messenger.
Islam encourages work, development and progress and doesn’t condemn prosperity nor does it consider poverty a virtue in itself. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said,
“The strong believer is better and more beloved by Allah than the weak one. Be keen to do what is of benefit to you, rely on Allah and do not act powerless, and when a problem befalls you, do not say: ‘If only I had done such and such, the result would have been such and such.’ Instead, you should say: ‘This was decreed by Allah and Allah does what He wills.’ For saying ‘If only’ opens the gate for Satan.” (Muslim from Abi Hurayrah)
The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) also said,
“Wholesome money is good for a righteous man.” (Ahmad)
In this hadith, there is a reference to the two factors that will determine whether the money was a blessing or a trial for someone: how he acquired it (wholesome money) and how he spent it (righteously).
However, Islam cautions that one must rely on Allah, for it is He who decides who earns what, and one who seeks money through what is haram will not benefit from it, even if he earns it. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said,
“The sanctified spirit (Jibreel) instilled in my bosom that no soul shall die until it had earned all provisions meant for it. Thus, fear Allah and seek them in the most beautiful way. Do not let your impatience for the slowness of the coming of provisions make you seek them through sinning, for what is with Allah shall not be obtained except through obedience.” (Reported by Abi Nu’aym in al-Hilyah from Abi 'Umamah)
You may say the following supplications
“O Allah, I seek refuge with You from disbelief, poverty, and the torment of the grave.”
The Prophet used to make that supplication after the salat (prayer), as reported by an-Nasa'ee from Abi Bakrah.
The following supplication is for facilitation of all of one’s difficult affairs:
"O Allah nothing is easy unless you make it so, and it is you who turns hardships into ease." [Reported by Ibn Hibban from Anas.]
I also recommend for myself and you istighfar (seeking forgiveness). Prophet Nooh said to his people,
}فقلت استغفروا ربكم إنه كان غفارا * يرسل السماء عليكم مدرارا * وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَارًا.}
{And I said, "Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.”}
I also recommend for you charity. Allah has said,
{وَمَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ}
{And whatsoever you spend (in Allah’s Cause), He will replace it. And He is the Best of providers.} [Saba’ 34:39]
It is also important that you maintain relationships with your kin and be kind to your family, particularly your parents. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said,
“He who wishes to have his provisions increase and his life blessed, let him maintain ties with his kin.” [Agreed upon – from Anas.]
All of the above must be accompanied by making provisions for earning a living and working hard. Allah has said,
{فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلاةُ فَانْتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيراً لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ}
{Then when the Jumu‘ah prayer is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah (by working), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.} [al-Jumu’ah 63:10]
Also, al-Bukhari narrates from az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said,
“If one of you were to take a rope and bring firewood on his back and sell it, thus preserving his dignity, that is better for him than asking of people who may give to him or withhold from him.”
May Allah bless you and facilitate your affairs.
