Question

Assalamu alaykum,

I attend a university and many non-Muslims use profane language in the classrooms, sometimes including the professors. Sometimes we are also told to watch something that contains profanity. I wanted to know if it is a sin for me to be in the presence of profanity in these ways.

Barak Allahu feekum.

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy

All praise belongs to Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon Allah’s final Messenger.

If there was an adequate alternative for your education, where the environment is better and more agreeable with our Islamic ethics, it would have been required of you to leave such an environment. If that alternative is lacking, then you avoid evil as much as you can. Yet it is not prudent for us Muslims to avoid college education [simply] because of the corruption in the college environment.

Allah knows best.
