Assalamu alaikum, 

Sometimes I need to do ghusl, but there is no water in my apartment. The only way to make ghusl is to rent a room in a hotel. The other choice is -of course- tayammum. Is it obligatory (fardh) that I rent a hotel room and get ghusl, or is it OK to do tayammum until I get water to my apartment?

It is not mandatory on you to spend a lot more than the usual cost of water to make ghusl. However, before resorting to tayammum, you may buy a large bottle of water – if that is available – and use it to make ghusl.
