Title: Intentionally or unintentionally missing salah (prayer)
Category: Prayer

Question

Asalamu Alaykum Shaykh,

I have a very hard time sometimes to pray salah. Below are the following scenarios that happen to me.

1. I have very low vitamin B12 [deficiency] and I sleep through my salat unintentionally. Have I sinned?

2. I read [pray] salah, but very late.

3. VERY RARELY, like yesterday, I don't feel like praying.

I am so ashamed to say this. So, I will not pray isha. Without an excuse.

Please help me and guide me on how I can fix this horrific behavior of mine. This just happened once or twice, but I don't want to repeat it again, so I need HELP.

Jazak Allah Khairun.

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy

All praise belongs to Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon Allah’s final Messenger.

Allah has said,

{لا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْساً إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا}

{Allah does not burden a person beyond his scope.} [Al-Baqarah 2:286]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"رفع القلم عن  ثلاثة عن الصبي حتى يبلغ وعن النائم حتى يستيقظ وعن المعتوه حتى يبرأ."

"Three (individuals) shall not be held accountable: the child until he reaches puberty, the one asleep until he wakes up, and the insane until he recovers." [Abu Dawood from ‘Ali]

Based on the above, there is no sin in being overtaken by sleep. Your wudhu is not nullified as long as you remain standing or sitting, which makes the possibility of passing wind [without being aware of it] very unlikely.

If you defer the salat until the time passes, that is a serious sin. Allah has said,

{إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا}

{Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours.} [An-Nisa' 4:103]

To not feel like praying is a sign of weakness of iman (faith). This is an emergency, and it means that you should pay attention to your iman and try to gain more certainty to avoid destruction. A heart attack could at most result in death, which we will all go through. However, the loss of iman means the loss of the hereafter, which is the ultimate loss.

I prescribe for you:

Contemplation of Allah’s signs throughout the universe

Seeking knowledge from trustworthy sources

Surrounding yourself with good company

Frequenting the houses of Allah (masjids)

Making dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Doing acts of kindness and charity.

Allah knows best.
