Question

Asalamu 'alaikum,

I read that a woman/man cannot marry each other until they have repented from “zina.”

By zina, does it refer to sexual intercourse that has taken place between both, and they must repent for this before marriage or it is invalid? There are many types of zina (i.e., zina of the eyes by looking [at what is haram], zina of the hands for unlawful touching of the opposite gender).

So does zina in this case refer to sexual intercourse specifically, which needs repentance before marriage?

Jazak Allah.

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy

All praise belongs to Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon Allah’s final Messenger.

Yes, zina here refers to sexual intercourse, and whenever it is mentioned without a qualifier, that is what “zina” means.

Allah knows best.
