Question

In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful

Peace, blessings and mercy of Allah be upon you.

I have a niece who is 14 year old, who has reached puberty two years ago and has become a young woman. She studies in a coed school in Canada, and wears the veil on her head, but still, she wears pants and shirts. Sometimes, she wears tight shirts, and I always keep advising her, but she likes to be in a good and well ordered figure in front of her female friends, and she has a good taste for colors and ornaments to be a la mode. Does this go with the Shari`ah rules? And what is your advice about the way she dresses up, taking into account that we live in a Western country in which Muslim women are exposed to hassles when they wear loose gowns (Jelbabs).

May Allah reward your kindness with goodness.

Answer

In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful

Peace, blessings and mercy of Allah be upon you.

Praise be to Allah, prayers and peace be upon His kind Messenger, family members, companions and followers.

When a woman reaches puberty, it is not permissible to have anything seen from her  except her face and her two hands, and she is requested to cover all her body with thick and loose clothes that do not reveal or ornament her body, and it should not be similar to  male clothes or to those of people of other religions. However, there is no problem in dressing up in harmonious and well ordered clothes and within the limits of the aforementioned rules. Allah knows best.
