Question
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatu Allaahi Wa Barakatuh. My dear brothers, may Allaah prolong your life to perform good deeds and I hope for you lasting health and safety and achievement of the highest ranks, the best of good deeds and the erasure of bad deeds during this noble month. Amen. I have two questions: The first one is about greeting others whilst in the toilets of the Masjid [May Allaah honor you] or other toilets? The second question is about the remembrance of Allaah in your heart in the toilet [may Allaah honor you]? I am a student studying in the United States of America and I live in a studio so every time I wake up in the morning I head first to the toilets [may Allaah honor you] to relieve myself then take a shower and make wudu. The problem that happened to me two days ago was while taking a shower I was saying the Adhkaar of the morning to myself and after completing the adhkaar I felt as if something pushed me out of the shower area violently with a strange power as if there was someone who carried me and threw me out of it. Noting that is the first time I have said the adhkaar in the toilets and this is the first time that this happened to me also. All praise is for Allaah that nothing harmful happened to me and no changes happened in my life but I wonder what happened there exactly? What is your explanation of it and what is your answer to my previous two questions? May Allaah reward you with all that is good and may He aid you to fast and pray and all Muslims as well. Ameen. Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatu Allaahi Wa Barakatuh.

Answer
All praise is for Allaah and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allaah his family, his companions and those who are loyal to him. It is detested to utter the remembrance of Allaah in a place where one relieves himself out of the glorification of the name of Allaah, Most High, and guarding it from being mentioned in such filthy places where the Shayateen gather. “For a man passed by the Prophet while he was relieving himself and greeted him but the Prophet did not reply to him”, reported by Muslim in his Sahih 370. And al-Muhajir bin Qunfuth narrated: “I came to the Prophet while he was relieving himself as I greeted him but he did not reply until he made wudu then said to me: I disliked to mention the name of Allaah unless I am in state of purity” thus we advise you to remember Allaah far from toilets and what happened to you might be an indication of this. And Allaah, Most High, knows best.
