Question

What is the verdict of repeating an adhan that has been recorded? Is it permissible to use only a recorded adhan for the congregational prayer in any given place?

Answer

Concerning the verdict of making the adhan (call to prayer) using a taped recording, the Islamic Fiqh Council of the Muslim World League has decided that merely broadcasting the adhan in mosques when the time for prayer has come via recording instrument or the like is not sufficient and is not an acceptable way to offer this act of worship. Subsequently, the adhan as called for by Shari`ah does not occur. They concluded that it is obligatory on the Muslims to make the adhan themselves for every time of prayer, in every mosque, due to the command which has been passed down to the Muslims over generations from the time of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) until now.

As for the matter of repeating and responding to a recorded adhan, this would be permissible if the time for prayer has come, due to the general nature of the Prophet`s command (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), "If you hear the call to prayer, repeat what the caller (al-mu`adhin) says."
