Question

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful,

To our excellent shaikh:

The supplication that is from the Sunnah is to say, after the muadhdhin has finished the adhan, "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call (of not ascribing partners to You) and of this prayer to be performed, bestow upon Muhammad al-wasilah (a station in Paradise) and al-fadilah (a rank of excellence over all creation) and send him (on the Day of Judgment) to the praised platform (or the role of intercession) which You promised him." Would it be correct to say this after the iqamah as well, seeking the good referred to in the hadith, "Between every two adhans, there is a prayer"?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful,

All praise is due to Allah and may peace and blessing be upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his household, his companions and whoever follows him. To proceed:

It appears to us that it is not correct to repeat behind the mu'adhdhin during the iqamah, nor is it correct to say the supplication mentioned following the adhan. That is because following in the iqamah is mentioned in a hadith transmitted by Abi Dawud, but it is weak, and therefore, it is not acceptable as evidence. This is also due to what is known concerning the Sunnah of the adhan, which is to make it long, to take one's time and to separate every two sentences with a pause. That gives those repeating behind him the chance to repeat it during the pauses. The Sunnah in regard to the iqamah, on the other hand, is to be quick, so this does not allow for repetition. As such, it is neither correct to repeat along with the iqamah, nor to make this supplication after it.

And Allah Almighty is the Most High and He knows best.
