Question
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakatuh. Noble shaykh, a sister asks: I have money in the bank that may father use to deposit there since I was young and didn't permit for me to touch it until now, and I know that the interest is impermissible upon me and that I am obligated to get rid of it. Am I allowed to give it to my husband under the condition that it isn't spent on me or on his affairs that don't return to me another time? If that isn't allowed for him either, then who is it permissible for me to give it to from my relatives and others... May Allaah bless you.
Answer
In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful. All praise is due to Allaah, and may peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, upon his family, companions, and those loyal to him. Interest is not to be accepted nor benefited from as it is also not to be left to expenditures that are empowered by it to make more interest-based contracts (i.e. the banks). Likewise it isn't to be spent on what angers Allaah and His messengers. Rather, it is only to be collected and gotten rid of by giving it to general expenditures. Of those (expenditures) are the needy from amongst the relatives. We don't advise with spending it on the husband because its benefit shall return to the spender in way form or another. Likewise it isn't to be spent on the fathers going up (i.e. father, grandfather, great grandfather, etc.) nor the children going down (i.e. children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc.). This is because these, if they are in need, spending on them becomes mandatory from the person's own wealth, not from his Zakah or his charity. We ask Allaah success for us and you. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
